Food24 has been running a cupcake baking competition this month. True to form, I kept browsing through the entries, ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ at all the pretty deliciousness, my head buzzing with weird combinations. Then I thought: what if I send in an entry? And I thought a little more. And then I convinced myself that if something is made in a cup and is hot at some stage of its sweet life, it may enjoy a post on hotcuppa. Probably the only post on this blog that strays from hot drinks… As if I hadn’t convinced myself enough, I’ll add a trusty hot drink favourite to the mix:

Haas Coffee Collective - Bo-Kaap Oh dear, winter arrives and the blogging goes into hibernation. I've taken ages to write about this little gem, partly because they keep growing and expanding their offering (and I crazily wanted to keep up with them - no chance!) and partly because of that hibernation. But I had to share this, because...
Starlings - Claremont I was introduced to Starlings a few years back when it was the venue for a work meeting, and was told that it's diagonally across from the train park. Not being a native Capetonian, I didn't have the developmental honour of playing in this park and will opt out at this advanced age (never been able to...
TRUTH.coffee - Green Point From bean to cup, TRUTH is an artisan coffee roastery that takes its coffee seriously. I've been wanting to go to this spot for a while and after meeting David Donde, TRUTH's owner, last week and experiencing his passion for creating an unadulterated cup of coffee, well, it moved to the top of my list.

Pepper Tree - Philadelphia Have you ever been to Philadelphia?...No, not that one, the one that's just after the Swartland Engen on the N7 towards Malmesbury. I was introduced to Philadelphia and Pepper Tree via the delicious scones and cream by my friends, Jodie and Tony. Part of the charm of Pepper Tree is that it's off the...

Oh dear, winter arrives and the blogging goes into hibernation. I’ve taken ages to write about this little gem, partly because they keep growing and expanding their offering (and I crazily wanted to keep up with them – no chance!) and partly because of that hibernation. But I had to share this, because it’s one of those special coffee spots that has outstanding coffee and a vibe to match!
Located in the colourful Bo-Kaap, parking is free, but hard to find. In the interest of preserving your sanity, here are a few alternatives to literally driving yourself dilly: park on a 90° angled hill (but bring a brick to wedge behind your tyre – I really saw this!), take the MyCiti bus then walk…or just go on the weekend – Haas Coffee is open on Saturdays and Sundays. The nutshell version: Find a way to get there – it’s worth the visit. Continue Reading
“True winter” is in Cape Town so hiding out in cuppa spots makes lots and lots of sense. Building a porch thingy-majiggy onto your house, on the other hand, makes no sense. There’s no sun right now. It’s cold outside. I can’t get to all those hot drink places on my list. But there you go, nothing like preparing for summer at the beginning of winter.
Rant aside, perhaps you’re making your way to the Neighbourgoods Market at The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock this Saturday. After battling for parking, the best thing you can do to save your sanity is to make your way to Espressolab. Espressolab is a microroaster so they roast their coffee onsite and, happily, they’re a fixture at the Biscuit Mill and not part of the market because that means they’re there all week! They’ve just celebrated their 2nd birthday – happy birthday, guys!
